In skin and edema therapy, we help reduce, resolve, or prevent issues with diseased or damaged skin.
Edema means “swelling.” Lymphedema is an abnormal swelling of a part of the body. It occurs just beneath the skin when the uptake and drainage of tissue fluid and waste products through the lymphatic system disrupted. Through skin and edema therapy, we can address this swelling and work with you to make it as comfortable as possible.
Swelling is the most characteristic feature of lymphedema. However, it also often accompanied by general fatigue, a heavy feeling in the arm or leg. Due to the extra weight or pressure on a nerve, the area may also be painful or tingle. After your edema treatment, you may experience some fatigue, an increased need to urinate, and your digestive system may be more stimulated.

In edema therapy, techniques such as manual lymphatic drainage, exercise therapy, breathing exercises, compression therapy in the form of bandaging/wrapping, and later a therapeutic elastic stocking used, along with advice on skincare and lifestyle guidelines.
Manual lymphatic drainage is a massage technique aimed at increasing and supporting the transport capacity of the lymphatic system. By using this method, fluid can move to areas where the lymphatic system is still intact, allowing it to absorb into circulation. Specific maneuvers also used to loosen connective tissue-like hardenings in the tissue.
Through wounds, bacteria can enter the body, leading to infections that cause an increase in lymph production. Therefore, it is important to prevent skin damage. During your edema therapy, a therapist can explain this further. We advise taking precautions such as using protective measures in and around the house, being cautious with insect bites, playing with pets, and avoiding sunburn.
Excessive or prolonged movement and lifting heavy or prolonged loads can lead to the accumulation of waste products in the muscles. To eliminate these waste products, extra lymph fluid produced. For this reason, during your skin and edema therapy treatment, it is important to stay active, avoid lifting heavy objects, refrain from letting your arm hang during walks, and find a balance between exertion and rest. Prevent overexertion by maintaining normal movement as much as possible.
