One of the most common issues we see is carpal tunnel syndrome. In your wrist there is a narrow passage, the carpal tunnel, through which the flexor tendons of your fingers and an important nerve, the median nerve, run. When that nerve becomes compressed—due to swelling or overuse, for example—tingling, numbness, or pain in the hand can develop. When the nerve compressed in the carpal tunnel, surgery is not always necessary.

During treatment, we look together at how we can relieve the pressure in the tunnel. With mobilizing exercises, nerve-gliding techniques, and small postural adjustments, we can “create more space” and help calm the nerve down again. Sometimes it is precisely those slight changes that make the difference.

Another complaint we often encounter is osteoarthritis of the thumb joint, also called basal thumb osteoarthritis. The thumb is a remarkable piece of anatomy. It can make many fine movements in all directions. It can pinch, grip, push, and hook. When the cartilage in those joint wears down—osteoarthritis—every movement becomes more painful. As we age, wear and tear are inevitable, and the thumb joint endures a throughout a lifetime. The osteoarthritis in the thumb cannot reversed, but we can often reduce the pain.

We need to make the joint more flexible and stronger and teach you how to use your hand more efficiently without overloading it. Sometimes this involves advice on splinting, other times exercises or mobilization techniques of the carpal bones. It is not just about relieving pain, but also about preserving the function of the thumb so you can continue doing your everyday activities.

What we see repeatedly is that, with the right guidance, more is possible than people often think. Your hands deserve care and attention, often with just a few small adjustments.

Do you notice your hands or wrists starting to protest? With the right advice, you can use them freely, strongly, and pain-free again—without surgery. Because mashed potatoes just taste better with applesauce.
